French artist Laurent Grasso's exhibition "Soleil Noir (Black Sun)" is being held at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum in Tokyo's Ginza district. The exhibition runs until January 31, 2016.
Laurent Grasso, a recipient of the Marcel Duchamp Prize, awarded to the most innovative artist living in France, has been attracting significant attention in recent years. He draws on historical and scientific sources to depict mystical events, legends, and paranormal phenomena. In the past, he has used the styles and techniques of 15th- and 16th-century Flemish painting and pre-Renaissance Italian painting to depict celestial phenomena, such as solar eclipses, auroras, and meteorites, which were rarely depicted at the time.
This exhibition, his first full-scale solo exhibition in Japan, features a number of works that reference various sources and are inspired by Japanese paranormal events and Edo-period legends, including a three-dimensional sculpture combining a medieval European monk statue with a Japanese clay figurine. The exhibition's unique interpretation of Japanese architectural elements also forms an important part of his work.
