
A large-scale exhibition by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, "Hiroshi Sugimoto: Hobbies and Art - Ajisenkyo/The Past and Present Trilogy," will be held at the Chiba City Museum of Art in Chiba Prefecture from October 28 to December 23.
The exhibition commemorates the 20th anniversary of the museum's opening. Featuring Hiroshi Sugimoto, who was one of the invited artists for the "Tranquility" exhibition, held in 1996 as the second instalment of the museum's inaugural exhibition, the exhibition will be divided into two sections: "Hobbies and Art," which takes an approach that transcends the boundaries of contemporary art, and "The Past and Present Trilogy," which displays three series of his representative works.
In the "Hobbies and Art" exhibition room on the 7th floor, a reproduction of the toko-kazari (floor decorations) that Sugimoto used to entertain celebrities from various fields in his serialized "Mysterious Kappo Ajisenkyo" series in Fujingaho magazine, featuring hanging scrolls and ornaments appropriate for each guest. Sugimoto will create 27 floor arrangements by combining masterpieces and rare items he has collected as a hobby, including antiques from the Heian to Edo periods, Western artifacts, and rare items from the Showa era.
The "Present and Past Trilogy" on the 8th floor will feature 16 large-format prints from three of Sugimoto Hiroshi's signature photographic series, "Diorama," "Theatre," and "Seascape," which brought him global fame from the 1980s to the early 1990s. These series have continued to be photographed since the mid-1990s, and the exhibition will feature a wide range of works, from his earliest to his most recent, including the latest in his diorama series, "Olympic Rainforest," which is over 4 meters wide, and the latest in his vertical theater series, "Teatro dei Rozzi, Siena," which will be shown in Japan for the first time.
