Will there be an exhibition of unsold flea market works by Sugimoto Hiroshi, Sophie Calle, and others?

Dec 5, 2014

Gallery Koyanagi in Tokyo's Ginza district is currently hosting the group exhibition "UNSOLD."

The exhibition features items left unsold at flea markets. On March 17, 2013, three artists who met through Sophie Calle secretly participated in a flea market held at Yasukuni Shrine.

Sophie Calle wrote an episode from her book "True Stories" for the occasion and sold items related to it. Hiroshi Sugimoto posed as a secondhand goods dealer and attached explanations of the origins of the word "mayutsuba" (browworm) to the displayed items and his own works. Ryuta Aoyagi is exhibiting his unique works, which resemble both antiques and installations.

The unsold items will be recreated as an installation at the exhibition. A catalog featuring photographs from the day and texts by the three artists will also be on sale.
