A botanical garden appears in Ginza!? "Ultra Plant Expo" brings together mysterious and rare species

Jul 12, 2015

The "Ultra Plant Expo: Seijun Nishihata and His Delightful Plants," showcasing approximately 50 rare plants collected from around the world, is running at the Pola Museum Annex until August 16th. Born in 1980, Seijun Nishihata is the fifth-generation owner of Hanau, a wholesale flower and plant shop that has been in business for over 150 years since the end of the Edo period. He has traveled throughout Japan and dozens of countries around the world, collecting thousands of different types of plants. He currently works as a "plant hunter," handling over 200 tons of plants annually. In 2012, he launched "Sora Botanical Garden," a project using plant materials. His projects, planned in collaboration with numerous companies and government agencies, have garnered widespread attention. Visitors can not only enjoy the mysterious and dramatic visuals of the plants, but also learn about their properties, names, and sources of acquisition, providing fascinating insights into their origins.

Among the exhibits are a huge carnivorous plant that even preys on field mice, a succulent plant with the Japanese name "Martian," an extremely rare species bestowed by a botanical garden run by Thai royalty, and a hybrid species that does not yet have a scientific name, being shown in Japan for the first time, making for an exhibition that can be enjoyed from a variety of angles, allowing visitors to see, learn, and enjoy the exhibit from various angles.

In addition, in the window on the first floor of the building, visitors can enjoy a display of plants that are linked to the worldview of the exhibition. During the exhibition, Nishihata himself is also scheduled to give a gallery talk and hold an autograph session.
