Rare footage has arrived from the wrap-up of "Palo Alto," the feature film directed by Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola and niece of Sofia Coppola. The film has also garnered attention for its cast, including Julia Roberts' niece Emma Roberts, Jack Kilmer, former Yves Saint Laurent model and actor Val Kilmer's son, and Nat Wolff, an actor and musician. Based on actor James Franco's "Palo Alto Stories" (2010), the story is a coming-of-age ensemble drama about April (Emma Roberts), an honor student struggling with her future and developing a relationship with her soccer team coach (James Franco), and her introverted classmate, Teddy (Jack Kilmer), who gradually become attracted to each other. This film premiered in limited release as part of the "Calite Fantastic! Cinema Collection 2015" special screening at Shinjuku Cinema Qualite in June, drawing the largest audience of the event. Perhaps due to its success, a re-screening has already been scheduled for July 25th. In a newly received video, Jia, who directed her first feature film, recalls her feelings upon wrapping up filming, saying, "I was so sad when it was over." The wrap-up was captured in black and white, but you can feel the emotion in the images of everyone celebrating with excitement at the completion of a film.
In addition, James Franco, who wrote, produced, and starred in the film, seemed very pleased with his collaboration with Gia, saying, "She was truly the perfect person to direct." The video also ends with a message from Gia to James, saying, "I'm grateful for your tremendous support of the next generation."
"Palo Alto Story" will be screened at Shinjuku Cinema Qualite for a limited two-week late screening starting July 25th.
