"Palo Alto" marks the feature film directorial debut of Gia Coppola, granddaughter of master director Francis Ford Coppola and niece of fashionista Sofia Coppola, known for films such as "Somewhere," which won the Golden Lion at the 67th Venice International Film Festival.
The film will be screened at Shinjuku Cinema Qualite from June 6th, and a comment from director Gia Coppola and the film's trailer have just been released.
The protagonist, April, is played by Julia Roberts' niece, Emma Roberts, a young actress who has been attracting attention for her roles in such popular films as the 2012 smash hit "Celeste & Jesse." Another highlight is Jack Kilmer, the son of actor Val Kilmer and a former Yves Saint Laurent model, who makes his film debut with this performance as a naive young man. James Franco, who wrote the novel on which the film is based, also stars as the man who becomes involved with April. Director Gia Coppola said of his novel, "I've never come across a novel that portrays young people so realistically, and that I liked so much." F.F. Coppola also makes a brief, uncredited voice appearance in the film. Dev Hynes, a renowned music producer and member of the band Blood Orange, has contributed four tracks, including two new songs under his own name. Sofia Coppola's film scores are known for incorporating indie trends, and her niece Gia's music has also been created with a fresh sound that shows her good taste, and the newly released trailer beautifully captures a scene of young people shining with youthful strife while also dealing with their own struggles.
The film "Palo Alto Story" will be released in limited release from June 6th at "Qualite Fantastic! Cinema Collection 2015" (held May 16th - June 26th) at Shinjuku Cinema Qualite.
