Spotify will exclusively stream podcast programs produced by TV Tokyo's audio content label "Uratou"!

Apr 21, 2021
Spotify, the audio streaming service used by over 345 million users worldwide, is partnering with TV Tokyo Communications Corporation to distribute podcast programs produced by Urato, an audio content label established in-house by TV Tokyo, a terrestrial television broadcaster, to Spotify listeners in Japan and overseas. The first project, "Hyper Hard-Boiled Gourmet Report no vision," Urato's first audio documentary, will be available exclusively on Spotify starting April 28. New episodes will be released every Wednesday.

Urato is a new project by TV Tokyo, a company known for producing many popular programs in the video industry, to produce programs using only audio, without video. Through this partnership with TXCOM, Spotify will distribute highly original podcasts planned and produced by "Uratou," delivering a unique audio experience to listeners. TXCOM will also gain access to audio production know-how and resources through Spotify, which has a proven track record and expertise as an audio streaming service and a global listener community, aiming to cultivate a new audience.

The first installment of this partnership, "Hyper Hard-Boiled Gourmet Report no vision," premiering on April 28, is an audio version of the popular TV show "Hyper Hard-Boiled Gourmet Report." Based on the concept of "eating = living," the director visits people living in lesser-known places around the world and learns about their lifestyles and outlook on life through their food. In contrast to the TV version, the audio version moves the setting to Japan, infiltrating unknown worlds where cameras cannot be brought with just a microphone. Through intimate interviews, possible only through audio and without face-to-face contact, the audio version immerses listeners in the true feelings and daily lives of the people who live there.

Comment from Nishi Chieko, Head of Audio Content Business, Spotify Japan Inc.
We are pleased to partner with TV stations, professionals in the video industry, to take on this new challenge of delivering stories using only audio. Spotify has worked with creators from a wide range of fields to plan and produce highly original audio content, delivering audio experiences that can only be enjoyed on Spotify. When we learned about the concept for "Ura Tou," we felt an overwhelming sense of mission: if not Spotify, then who else could? Through this partnership with TV Tokyo, a company known for its creative planning and keen sense of the times, which has produced many popular programs, we hope to pursue a new style of storytelling that can only be created with audio, and to enable as many listeners as possible to experience the appeal of audio content.

Manager and TV Tokyo Representative Yosuke Inoue's Comment
"I wanted to abandon video." Around spring of last year, I heard about the audio content concept from Director Kamide of "Hyper Hard-Boiled Gourmet Report." Soon after, a team of volunteers formed, and through a series of video conferences, we've finally reached this day.
TV Tokyo's audio content label, "Ura Tou," will produce and distribute original content with a focus on new audio experiences. Unlike video, audio content is not limited by time or place; it is light and free, leaving much to the listener's imagination, and is intimate. This new sense of distance is enabling the creation of things that have not been conveyed on television until now.

After much trial and error, I am thrilled to be embarking on this project with Spotify, the world's largest audio platform, which also continues to support creators. In the upcoming digital audio content market, we will also be implementing new initiatives as a business model.

With no budget and no staff, TV Tokyo will no longer have video, but instead, we look forward to meeting everyone who is not in front of a TV and whom we have never met before. Here begins TV Tokyo, an audio-only platform.

Comment from Kamide Ryohei, producer of "Hyper Hard-Boiled Gourmet Report no vision"
I produced this audio version amidst a flurry of surprises. The "expression in a voice" only emerges when you close your eyes and concentrate on the person's voice. The surprise is that this may be even more eloquent than the facial expression projected on the screen. The train rocks. The doors open. The hustle and bustle of the platform slowly seeps in...———. When each of these ordinary scenes is expressed through sound, it connects with your own memories and emerges as vivid visions. And it was a natural surprise to see how calm and intimate the conversation could be without a camera. Up until now, we've abandoned scripts, locations, and narration, but now we've finally abandoned visuals. We're now lighter than ever in the history of television.

・First episode release date: April 28th
・Program concept: An audio version of the cult hit program "Hyper Hard-Boiled Gourmet Report," produced by TV Tokyo producer Kamide Ryohei, which has been decided to be distributed on Netflix and was also a winner of a Galaxy Award. The TV version is based on the concept of "eating = living," and the director visits gang members, soldiers, refugees, ex-prisoners, and the poor in dangerous places and jobs around the world to conduct intimate interviews and learn about the foods they eat to survive. The audio version will feature coverage of various locations in Japan, with intimate interviews with people who "cannot show their faces" and are possible only through audio, creating a powerful and moving work.
