SOUND TOUR is a project utilizing the audio streaming service Spotify to take visitors on a "sound-based journey" through Japan. This experimental project aims to create a deeper experience by immersing visitors in the unique scenery and stories of each region of Japan through sound. Just as certain landscapes are conjured up when we hear sound, and certain sounds are heard when we see scenery, sound can transport us anywhere.
SOUND TOUR involves placing Spotify's unique barcodes, known as "Spotify Codes," in harmony with the surrounding scenery. By scanning the codes in the Spotify app, visitors can access music playlists that complement the story of that scenery. By simultaneously experiencing both scenery and sound, this new audiovisual experience transforms scenery into scenery and invites visitors on an unforgettable "journey of the heart."
The first sound journey begins in Ishikawa Prefecture.
For this project, music producer and artist Matt Cab will sample the various sounds abundant in Ishikawa Prefecture. Three new songs have been created by fusing familiar local sounds.
Spotify Codes installed in three locations
Spotify Code 1 "CHOUCHIN (SOUND TOUR)"
Paper lanterns, a local traditional craft, are used as material. Installed in Nishi Chayamachi, Kanazawa City.
Spotify Code 2 "SAKURA (SOUND TOUR)"
Cherry blossom petals, which herald the arrival of spring, are used as material. Installed along the Saigawa River in Kanazawa City.
Spotify Code 3 "IKA (SOUND TOUR)"
Made with squid, a local specialty. Installed at Hane Fishing Port in Noto Town (Housu District).
