COMME des GARÇONS JUNYA WATANABE MAN presented its 16 Spring/Summer collection at the Immigration History Museum. The venue was a landmark Art Deco building originally built as the Colonial Pavilion for the 1931 World's Fair and later used as the Museum of African and Oceanian Art.
To the throbbing of African drums, models appeared wearing necklaces, headgear, shields, spears, and other ethnic adornments, such as those of the Maasai people of Africa. However, the theme was not Africa; rather, the focus was on designer Junya Watanabe's signature delicate patchwork. Shirts, shorts, jackets, and pants were skillfully patchworked with prints such as batik, a favorite of Africans, as well as houndstooth, Prince of Wales check, and florals, creating a seemingly international look. Many intricately crafted reversible jackets were also featured. The collaboration with the ever-popular Levi's featured patchwork denim jackets and jeans, while the collaboration shoes with Snickers were mostly lace-up, with a classic feel that enhanced each look.
