To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its opening, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Ebisu, Tokyo, will host "Apichatpong Weerasethakul: Ghosts," an exhibition by Thai-born filmmaker and director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, from December 13 to January 29, 2017.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul is a filmmaker who has created photographs, films, videos, installations, and feature films based on the legends and folktales of Thailand's northeastern region, as well as personal memories and dreams of the forest. His work uncovers the depths of humanity amid the mundane everyday, while also closely relating to social issues such as immigration, inequality, and politics in contemporary Thai society.
The exhibition, centered around the keyword "ghost," will feature 23 works, including recent works primarily from the museum's collection, as well as archive works. The keyword "Ghost" incorporates two meanings: the inherent characteristics of the image itself, which operate through media such as photography and video, and the monster-like invisible powers that lurk within politics and history. The exhibition will feature a variety of video works, including Apichatpong's first video work, which shows sunlight streaming in through a window into a seemingly dimly lit room, flickering and moving, as well as early experimental films made while studying for his master's degree in film production at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and works that explore lost memories in everyday life and the dark side of Thai society. Additionally, during the exhibition (until January 5th), a "Short Stories Selected by Apichatpong Himself" (25 works in total, 4 programs) will be screened in the museum's first-floor hall, including works shown for the first time.
In addition, a symposium will be held on December 18th, where Apichatpong himself and others will discuss the history and politics behind his works, as well as the issue of "invisibility" inherent in images, through dialogue with experts with a deep knowledge of Asia.
