The remodeled third floor fashion floor of Isetan Shinjuku reopened on Wednesday, December 5, 2012.
Around the east and west escalators and the space connecting them is an independently curated sales area called "Park." Based on the concept of a sales area that serves as the starting point, intermediate point, and end point for shopping trips, various events and sales events are held here.
This park was proposed by Noritaka Tange, president of Tange Associates, and Yasumichi Morita, president of the design firm GLAMOROUS co.,ltd., who are in charge of the design and planning for the remodeled store. "The Shinjuku store's traffic flow is uniform, like the grid of Kyoto's traditional Japanese grid. It was common for customers to lose track of their destination and end up leaving before reaching their destination. To solve this problem, we incorporated the east-west escalators in the center of the building, creating a 'Central Park' within the floor, where we would create the most trendy select shops. By placing the starting point in the center of the floor, the distance to each sales floor is roughly equal, making it easier to see what you're looking for. You start in the park, achieve your goal, and return to the park. People don't get lost when they have a starting point, a destination, or a goal. For example, the Louvre is huge, but you don't get lost because the pyramid is the center of the journey," said Morita. Tange also said, "Isetan has a strong image of fashion, but looking at archive photos, I noticed the greenery. Looking at Shinjuku from a bird's-eye view, the greenery of Shinjuku Gyoen and the rooftop of the Isetan Shinjuku store is striking. Inspired by this, we aimed to create the ideal environment for a department store of the future, befitting the global Isetan." On the west side is "West Park," a collection of accessory brands that have established their own unique identities, while on the east side, the Re-Style gift shop, which previously only opened for a limited time, has been reborn as "Re-Style Gift," a permanent establishment. There are also sales areas that appeal to the senses, such as "Design Park," which offers a selection of design books and bicycles. The space connecting the east and west sides has been set up as "The Stage #3," where events change weekly. To commemorate the remodel, "Fantasy Couture," a collaboration between Yoshitaka Amano and ANREALAGE, showcasing the fusion of art and fashion, is running until December 11th. The park has been clearly demarcated with new flooring. Plans are in place to extend the park to the second and fourth floors, which will reopen after remodeling on March 6, 2013.
