Found MUJI holds special exhibition "Handicrafts of Everyday Life - India" showcasing the traditional handicrafts of everyday life that create textiles.

Event Date:2021.04.23-07.08
Apr 7, 2021
Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the company that plans and develops MUJI products, will be holding a special exhibition, "Found MUJI: Handcrafted Life in India," at Found MUJI from April 23 to July 8, 2021.

In India, handicrafts are a common part of everyday life, in every region. Handicrafts are closely linked to everything from the things we wear to the tools we use in our daily lives, and the lives of the local areas and cities.

In the late 18th century, India was influenced by the Industrial Revolution in Britain, and as mechanization progressed, the number of people involved in handicrafts drastically decreased. Later, in the 19th century, Gandhi's Indian independence movement, which stressed the importance of making things with one's own hands, is said to have led to the revival and spread of handicrafts, particularly hand-spun and hand-woven khadi, throughout India. While this activity has since undergone changes, it has become an idea and a philosophy, firmly rooted in people's lives and continues to this day.

We introduce the handicrafts of fabric-making that have been passed down uninterrupted throughout our long history.
