The secretive work of painter Robert Coutras is revealed. Exhibition begins at NADiff in Ebisu.

Apr 1, 2016

To commemorate the publication of "Robert Coutelas 1930-1985: The Works of a Robert Coutelas Artist," a two-volume collection of the artist's career, an exhibition titled "Coutelas in a Small Room" has begun at the NADiff Gallery in Ebisu, Tokyo. Robert Coutelas was a French painter born in Paris in 1930 and died suddenly in 1985. His works include "My Nights," a series of small, often referred to as "cults," depicting bizarre and humorous images—children with buttocks protruding, the Virgin and Child in flames, people being condemned by the guillotine, and faces peeking out from between the legs—on thick cardboard with gelatin bases. His other works include terracotta sculptures of heads and animals, and numerous gouache portraits called "My Ancestors."

The March 12th release of the anthology "Robert Coutelas 1930-1985: The Works of a Painter" includes not only the carts and gouaches, but also the "reserve" oil paintings that Robert did not wish to sell or disperse during his lifetime. The collection also includes his vast collection of sketches and drawings, as well as nearly all of his major works, including those donated to the Jeanne Matochon Foundation in 1999.

In addition to introducing the collection, the exhibition will also display some of the cult works, gouache, and terracotta works that emerged from Vaugirard's small room in Paris. Photographs by Isao Hirachi, a photographer who has long photographed Robert Coutras's work, will also be on display. The exhibition will run until May 8th.
