The exhibition "How Japanese Textiles are Made" will be held from April 8th to May 29th at Open MUJI Tokyo inside MUJI Yurakucho.
With the development of a wide variety of synthetic fibers, the uses and expressions of "textiles" have expanded. While Japanese textiles are attracting attention from around the world, the reality surrounding textile production is harsh, with international price competition and issues surrounding successors. This exhibition focuses on "textiles," which are familiar to us, but whose diverse origins, types, properties, structure and mechanisms are not well known. We will unravel the hidden stories behind each piece of fabric and introduce the source of its appeal.
As related events, from 7pm to 8:30pm on April 15th, there will be a talk event entitled "Japanese Fabrics: A Tradition That Transcends Time" by Sudo Reiko, design advisor for MUJI Fabrics, and from 11am to 12pm, 1pm to 2pm, and 3pm to 4pm on April 17th, there will be a workshop where you can make your own original carp streamer using scraps of fabric and scraps of MUJI bedding covers. From 7pm to 9:30pm on May 11th, there will also be a talk event on fabric making entitled "The Place Where Fabrics Are Born", inviting creators from the dyeing and weaving production areas introduced in the exhibition.
