Muji's world's largest flagship store, Yurakucho, reopens after renovation, with a sales floor that combines books and merchandise

MUJI Yurakucho (Infos Yurakucho, 3-8-3 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), the world's largest flagship store, will reopen on September 4th. Details have recently been announced.

The renovation, aimed at providing new discoveries and hints related to daily life, has created a sales floor that combines products and books. Many people have had the experience of casually dropping into a bookstore and picking up a book and finding an unexpected insight or hint, back when the internet was not yet widespread. Following on from MUJI Canal City Hakata, the store has commissioned Seigo Matsuoka, director of the Institute of Editorial Engineering, which provides "knowledge technology," to select books to enable customers to discover and hint the same things they can through books. The bookshelves, designed by the architectural firm Atelier Bow-Wow, are arranged in the shape of a dragon, creating a space where customers can encounter discoveries and hints. The third floor living space will feature the most comprehensive MUJI display in the world, along with interior advisors on hand to provide advice on a variety of living spaces, from storage and room redecorating to renovations. In addition to the existing "INFILL+" service, which proposes practical kitchens, storage, and other lifestyle components, the store will also launch "INFILL0," a service in collaboration with MUJI HOUSE, a housing business, that strips a space back to its basic structure and utilizes that structure to create new "living vessels." Additionally, the "Re-MUJI" initiative, which began at Tenjin Daimyo and Nagoya Meitetsu Department Stores this spring, will also be rolled out to the new store on the occasion of the reopening. Shirts, cut-and-sew items, and other items will be re-dyed in domestic factories using clothing collected through the "FUKU-FUKU Project," an initiative that utilizes cutting-edge technology to collect old MUJI clothing and convert it into energy resources. The price is a flat 2,900 yen (tax included), and in addition to the existing indigo blue, black will also be available at this store first.

In addition, the exhibition space "ATELIER MUJI", which previously focused on exhibitions, has been revamped as "Open MUJI", which places emphasis on participatory communication. The dining space "Meal MUJI" has also been renamed "Cafe & Meal MUJI", and in addition to further strengthening the cafe menu, an espresso machine has been introduced to serve freshly ground and brewed coffee and cafe lattes.
