Ryan McGinley, acclaimed as "America's most important photographer," is holding his first large-scale museum solo exhibition in Japan, "Ryan McGinley BODY LOUD!", at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo, until July 10th.
In 2002, after sending his first photo book (privately published), "The Kids Are Alright," to editors and art professionals, he received offers from magazines such as "Dazed & Confused," "Index," and "i-D." The following year, at the young age of 25, he held a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, catapulting him to instant fame as a photographer. "Ryan McGinley BODY LOUD!" will feature approximately 50 works, selected by the artist himself, ranging from his early to his most recent works. McGinley, who has produced many nude works, is known for his signature "Road Trip" series, which began in 2004 and continued through 2013, photographing his subjects while traveling continuously for 10 years. Prior to each shoot, he shared his visual imagery with his models through an "inspiration book." These images capture moments of nude young people forgetting themselves and behaving freely, running across vast fields and jumping from treetops. Also on display is his large-scale work "Yearbook," comprised of approximately 500 portraits of ordinary models scouted in New York City and elsewhere, photographed nude in a studio. In his 2014 solo exhibition at New York's Teem Gallery, this spatial installation filled the entire space from wall to ceiling, creating a powerful impact with its colors and images. This time, approximately 30 meters of the exhibition space's wall will be used to display portraits, large and small, freely arranged against colorful backgrounds. The exhibition will also feature a number of carefully selected works from his "Encounter" series, as well as his "Morrissey", "Grid", "Animals" and his latest series, "Autumn" and "Winter".
FASHION HEADLINE conducted an exclusive interview with Ryan McGinley, who visited Japan for the exhibition.
