"White Vessels," a photo exhibition by leading Korean photographer Koo Bonchan, will be held from April 27th to May 16th at 8/ART GALLERY/Tomio Koyama Gallery on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie.
White porcelain is a ceramic form representative of Korean culture, once favored by the aristocracy of the dynasty and now widely enjoyed by ordinary people. Its simple, unadorned porcelain has captivated and enthusiastically collected folk art activists in Europe, the United States, and Japan. As a result, the only places where traces of white porcelain can be found today are in museum collections overseas. Upon learning of this history, Koo Bonchan sought out the heritage of his home country that had been scattered overseas, visiting museums and collectors to meticulously capture the delicate texture and every expression of the white porcelain with his own camera, leaving a legacy of photographs.
In this upcoming photo exhibition, Koo Bonchan, with the cooperation of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, will exhibit works from his series "White Vessels," which he photographed in 2006 of Yanagi Soetsu's white porcelain collection. The exhibition will feature 13 platinum prints, carefully selected by print production company amanasalto in collaboration with Koo Bonchan and newly produced in 2015. The works capture the unique texture of white porcelain that has aged over the years, as well as its simple yet delicate beauty.
