Contemporary artists John Wood and Paul Harrison's first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan, "John Wood & Paul Harrison: Sometimes It's Hard to Explain," will be held at Gallery A of the NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC) in Shinjuku, Tokyo, from November 21 to February 21, 2016. Based in the UK, John Wood and Paul Harrison began working together in 1993, producing performances, animations, and video works that incorporate architectural sets and various devices. Their works, mostly shot from fixed angles and exuding a sense of humor, have gained popularity both in Japan and abroad, and have been featured in traveling exhibitions by the Mori Art Museum and the British Council in Japan, with six of their works also being shown at the British Council's "Open Space 2012" exhibition.
The title of this exhibition, their first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan, "Something is Difficult to Explain," refers to the fact that just as it is difficult to express a sentence in another language or to explain a video in words with complete accuracy, there are inevitably things that are lost when trying to replace the two artists' ideas with different expressions. The venue will display a variety of humorous, unexpected and thought-provoking works categorized into four categories: performance, animation, story, and film. Twenty works will be on display, including some that will be shown in Japan for the first time.
