A stroll through Paris in Hakone, an exhibition exploring the relationship between "nature" and "city" through paintings by Monet and Chagall

Nov 22, 2015

The Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, is running a special exhibition, "Nature and the City: From Impressionism to the Ecole de Paris," exploring the relationship between nature and the city through paintings, running until March 13, 2016. Landscapes of nature and the city change with the times. As modernization advanced in the late 19th century, artists sought new ways to connect these two subjects. This exhibition features approximately 70 landscape paintings by artists such as Monet and Chagall, depicting Paris as it transformed into a vast metropolis during the wave of modernization from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Through these masterpieces, the exhibition unravels the changing aesthetics surrounding nature and the city, focusing on Paris as a city of art. Also on display are paintings and postcards from that time featuring buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, which were built for the Paris World's Fairs of 1889 and 1900. In addition, maps will be distributed at the venue, allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibition as if they were strolling around Paris while looking at the materials.

Also on display are two newly acquired works: "Girl and Cat" by Leonard Foujita (Tsuguharu Foujita), a painter known for his "milky ground," and "Eugène Boudin" by Eugène Boudin, the painter who taught Monet how to paint outdoors.
