Patchy Cake Eater presents its collections twice a year at Pitti Uomo and on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo (MBFWT). For its Spring/Summer 2016 collection, two billiard tables were placed in the center of the venue, and the show unfolded as if models were playing a game at a pool bar. The collection featured a two-tone T-shirt, a short-sleeved shirt with a gingham check and stripe pattern at the chest, a formal starched plaid short-sleeved shirt with a hidden placket and bow tie, shorts with patent leather monk straps, an MA1 jacket and varsity jacket paired with shorts for a minimalist look, and a polka-dot and solid-color jacket paired with a striped T-shirt for a teddy boy vibe. Jackets, which previously featured a tight silhouette, were given a slightly looser, boxier silhouette, perfectly capturing the current trends in men's fashion and blending styles uninhibitedly, a style characteristic of the brand. The attention to materials, stitching, and details all convey the quality honed at Pitti.
The way the show is presented changes dramatically each season, making it difficult to grasp the brand's image as it is overly tied to its theme. However, as the seasons go by, it is clear that the brand is supporting the real scene of luxury-oriented Asian men's fashion trends.
The 2016 Spring/Summer collection was shown at Pitti Uomo in June, and then the runway in Tokyo was about four months later. This time lag is a drawback from a global business perspective, but designer Morino Shigenori says, "I chose to show it in Tokyo, my home ground where I was born and raised, because I believe the MBFWT stage is my place."
