Oct 4, 2014

The photo festival "STEP OUT!" will be held on October 5th at the Gaien Campus of Kyoto University of Art and Design in Aoyama, Tokyo.
This event was launched from a feature in the photography magazine "IMA" titled "STEP OUT! Aim for the World! The Path to Becoming a Top Photographer," a step-up guide for photographers. The venue will host talk sessions and seminars with photographers, critics, curators, and others. A workshop will feature lectures for young photographers.
The talk show will be divided into three parts. In "The Future of Contemporary Photography," critic Hidetoshi Fuse will discuss the appeal of photographer Ryudai Takano's portraits, a specialty of his. In "DAIDO Before Dawn: Tracing the 'Records'," photographer Daido Moriyama will discuss his life's journey through the "Records" series, which he has considered his life's work. In "Landscapes on the Borderline," Russian photographer Alexander Gronsky and others will discuss the possibilities of landscape photography in the modern era. Each event is scheduled for 1 hour and 30 minutes, with a capacity of 80 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The participation fee is 2,000 yen for the general public and 1,600 yen for IMA magazine subscribers. The seminars are also scheduled to consist of three lectures. Photographer Keizo Kitajima will guide us through the changing ways of exhibition expression with the times in "What Prints Photographers Need: A Necessary Condition for Photographic Exhibits." Reisa Tsuda, Japan representative for art website Ocula, and others will offer advice on creating websites with an international perspective in "The Present and Future of the Global Art Market: New Trends in Art x IT." Photographer Sohei Nishino will discuss how to present work at festivals both in Japan and overseas, as well as relationships with galleries in "Working Globally as a Photographer, Working with Other Photographers Globally." "What Prints Photographers Need: A Necessary Condition for Photographic Exhibits" is a one-hour lecture with a capacity of 50 people and free participation. Other sessions will be 1 hour and 30 minutes long, with a maximum capacity of 60 people. The participation fee is 1,000 yen for the general public and 800 yen for IMA magazine subscribers.

In the workshop, art director Yoshihisa Tanaka, who has worked on various photobooks, will introduce his know-how and process. Photographer Daisuke Yokota will also give a lecture on photobook promotion. The event will last 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours. The maximum capacity is 30 people, and the participation fee is 2,000 yen for the general public and 1,600 yen for IMA magazine subscribers.

In addition, Tanaka's workshop will be limited to 5 people from the capacity, and you can have him critique your past portfolios or a dummy book you plan to create. If you select this "with presentation" plan, the additional participation fee is 2,000 yen for the general public and 1,600 yen for IMA magazine subscribers.
