Stuffed toy artist LIEN's solo exhibition held in Daikanyama. Fashion items also on display and for sale.

Oct 30, 2014

Stuffed animal artist Lien's first full-scale solo exhibition in two years, "Without Ceremony," will be held at Gallery Speak For in Daikanyama, Tokyo, from November 7th. "Making stuffed animals is a way of expressing myself through life's confusions and everyday frustrations, an act akin to a ceremony," says Lien. The title of the exhibition, which translates to "unreserved desire," embodies the core of his creative pursuit: wanting to see and wear things he finds cute and beautiful. In addition to new stuffed animals and hunting trophies in 3D frames, new forms of work that take a more fashion-oriented approach, such as earmuffs, shawls, and headpieces, will also be on display and for sale. A gallery talk by the artist himself is scheduled for 6:30 PM on the 7th. Lien began his creative career in 2004. Using his self-taught stuffing techniques, he breaks free from the typical stuffed animal forms of eyes, noses, hair, heads, limbs, etc., to create fantastical creatures with a free-spirited imagination. Mixing the elegance of high fashion with a dark charm, he presents stuffed animals to the world not as toys in the narrow sense, but as sophisticated works of art. He has exhibited his works at exhibitions held at Laforet Harajuku, Isetan Shinjuku, and Matsuya Ginza, and in 2011 he started a teddy bear class. He was also in charge of creating stuffed animals for Rena Nounen's photo book "Guriguri Gurumi," released in 2014.
