Dior will hold a large-scale exhibition, "Esprit Dior - The World of Dior," in Ginza, Tokyo, from October 30th. Details were announced on the 28th.
The exhibition spans four floors, from the first basement floor to the third floor, and traces the history of the Maison from the era of Christian Dior, which began in 1947, to its modern-day successor, Raf Simons, through a vast collection of Dior materials, including dresses, accessories, fragrances, photographs, and design drawings.
The first and second floors will chronicle the history of the Maison through 12 sections, including "Dior and Japan" and "Dior and Artists." In addition to the Maison's iconic "Bar" suit and the floral-embroidered "Miss Dior" evening dress, introduced in Spring/Summer 1945, the exhibition will also feature illustrations by legendary artist Rene Gruau, who created Dior's visual image, and photographs and videos by Patrick Demarchelier, who has been photographing Dior for many years.
The third floor will feature artworks depicting the story of the Maison's iconic "Lady Dior" bag, launched in 1995, set in various cities around the world. Various Japanese artists, including sculptor Kohei Nawa, flower artist Makoto Azuma, and contemporary artist Aiko Miyanaga, have paid homage to Dior in their own unique styles. Related publications, including photo books, will also be available for purchase.
The "Dior Atelier" section on the basement floor will feature the production process, combining traditional techniques with the latest technology to create beauty. A replica of the atelier will be set in part of the floor, and artisans who actually work in the Paris atelier will visit Japan on a weekly basis during the exhibition. You can get a close-up look at couture sewing techniques and the meticulous handiwork that goes into finishing each perfume bottle. You can also have a conversation with the artisans.
In addition, the free smartphone app "Esprit Dior Tokyo" is available. You can view an overview of the exhibition, photos, interviews, and more. Wi-Fi is available throughout the venue.
