Isetan Shinjuku's "DAYS" section on the second floor of the main building is promoting its recycled leather product line, "MAKOO," aimed at ethically minded customers who care about the environment and society. The promotion runs until November 4th. MAKOO uses crushed cowhide scraps from bag manufacturing, mixed with rubber resin, and tanned tote bags, tumbler covers, and small accessory cases. The products, which have a tanned leather-like color, change color over time. Items such as the "THANK YOU" tote bag (2,800 yen) and tumbler covers (large 920 yen, small 880 yen) are selling well, with many customers purchasing them as small gifts. The tote bags, which can be washed with water if they get dirty, seem to be popular among mothers with young children. DAYS is located in a zone targeted at mothers in their 30s, categorized as "urban mothers," and primarily stocks towels, accessories, cosmetics, and other miscellaneous items. According to the sales staff, customers in this zone are highly interested in ethical practices as members of society, even though they live in the city, and seek individuality and high quality in their food, clothing, and shelter. There have also been requests from customers looking for thoughtful gifts for moms at kindergarten, etc., which led to the decision to promote the brand.
Maco is a design group founded by Makoto Kotobuki. They are particularly focused on reuse projects, such as proposing goods made from recycled leather.
