Alexander McQueen unveiled its Spring/Summer 2015 collection on September 30th. Creative Director Sarah Burton was inspired by antique kimonos. Perhaps due to a visit to Japan for a party held at the brand's flagship store in Aoyama, Tokyo, the collection incorporates Japanese elements. Sarah has been visiting Japan since her days as Lee's assistant. The inspiration for the collection is clear: an outerwear piece featuring cherry blossom appliqués on python leather, a jacket made of fabric with a family crest-like design, a ruffled dress decorated with cherry blossom prints and embroidered cherry blossoms, a dress with flared sleeves reminiscent of a kimono, and a dress with a wide waistband like an obi. The pattern matching is flawless, even with the use of pleats and cuts, demonstrating the brand's technical expertise. The straight cuts, pleats, and jinbaori-like lapels are reminiscent of armor. The neckline is also square-cut. The iconic skulls were fun to watch, some wearing carp and some with geisha-style Japanese hairstyles. The key colours were cherry blossom pink with black and white, giving the look an alluring geisha vibe.
Orchid sculptures by contemporary artist Marc Quinn and a lacquered floor added floral accents to the runway.
