Tango Akamatsu and Aomatsu trains designed by world-renowned industrial designer Eiji Mitooka will begin operation in April

Mar 4, 2013

The launch date for the first train designed by industrial designer Mitooka Eiji for Kitakinki Tango Railway has been set for April 14th.

The two renovated trains will be coupled together and operate on two routes. The "Tango Akamatsu" train runs on even-numbered days between Nishi-Maizuru Station in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture, and Toyooka Station in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. The "Tango Aomatsu" train, which operates on odd-numbered days, runs from Nishi-Maizuru Station to Fukuchiyama Station in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, and from Fukuchiyama Station to Amanohashidate Station in Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture.

The train's interior uses wood with a "pine" motif, symbolizing the white sand and green pines of Amanohashidate and other sites. Counter seating will be installed to allow passengers to enjoy the scenery, and train displays will feature local products from the Tango region. Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1947, Mitooka is active in a variety of design genres, including architecture, railway vehicles, graphics, and products. In particular, his innovative designs for JR Kyushu's station buildings and carriages have attracted attention beyond the realm of railway enthusiasts. He has received awards such as the Brunel Prize, an international railway design competition held in the UK, the Blue Ribbon Award and Laurel Award from the Japan Railway Association, the Good Design Award, and more.
