On March 15th, the winners of the 5th Magazine Awards, which are for magazines published between July and December 2012, were announced and the award ceremony was held.
BRUTUS (Magazine House), which presents current-trend projects in full-length feature articles, won the Grand Prix. In addition, men's fashion magazine POPEYE (same publisher) won the runner-up prize in recognition of its "city boy" approach since its renewal in May last year. Popeye's current editor-in-chief, Kinoshita Takahiro, was formerly deputy editor-in-chief of BRUTUS, where he was in charge of fashion.
Other winners included MonoMax (Takarajimasha), which became a hot topic for its included COACH fountain pen, as the runner-up, and special awards went to NHK TV Textbook '100 Minutes De Meisaku' (NHK Publishing), which raises awareness of classic works among the general public, and COURRiER Japon (Kodansha), which selects news at a global standard and appeals to business people.
The Magazine Awards were launched in 2011 with the aim of raising awareness of magazines' "information dissemination capabilities," "discerning skills," and "content creativity," thereby increasing opportunities to purchase magazines and revitalizing the industry. Selections are made by magazine professionals, including publishing house staff and bookstore staff, and the award is given to magazines that are deemed to have most powerfully demonstrated the "power of magazines."
