Ultimate versatility and open-air driving pleasure: Ferrari Portofino M arrives in Japan for the first time

Jan 28, 2021

Ferrari Japan has announced the first Japanese arrival of the Ferrari Portofino M, the latest 2+ GT spider that was unveiled in Maranello, Italy in September 2020.

A significant evolution from the Ferrari Portofino, this new model is packed with technological innovations. Notable features include a redesigned powertrain, a brand new 8-speed gearbox, and a 5-position manettino that includes a Race mode, all of which are completely new features for a Maranello GT spider.

The "M" in the car's name stands for "Modificata" (modified), a designation that has been used at Ferrari to designate models that have undergone evolutionary changes to boost performance. The Portofino M embodies all of the Prancing Horse's values of innovation, while maintaining the utmost respect for Ferrari's heritage, passion, and relentless quest for perfection.
"The Portofino M is an entirely unprecedented model, combining true GT performance with driving pleasure, agility, and exceptional everyday versatility. Every time our customers drive it, we will be offering a journey of rediscovery."
Federico Pastorelli, President and CEO of Ferrari Japan Co., Ltd.

>Powertrain
The Portofino M's powertrain is a 3,855 cc engine from the V8 turbo family, which has been named International Engine of the Year four times in a row. It has been optimized to deliver a maximum output of 620 hp at 7,500 rpm, 20 hp more than the Ferrari Portofino. Additionally, the seven-speed gearbox has been replaced by an all-new eight-speed gearbox - in fact, this is the first time that an open-top Ferrari has been fitted with one. The oil-bathed dual-clutch design allows for a 20% smaller clutch module and a 35% improvement in torque delivery.

Dynamics
The greatest innovation in terms of vehicle dynamics is undoubtedly the introduction of the five-position Manettino, a first for a Prancing Horse GT Spider. The aim is to enhance the already exceptional handling and traction of the Ferrari Portofino with the addition of Race mode. Supported by the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, Race mode's focus is on maximising driving pleasure and enjoyment behind the wheel.

Design
The significant technological advances made by this model are visibly emphasised by the new front end design. The bumpers, in particular, are sportier and more aggressive. Both the interior and exterior now have more fluid forms, sometimes sharper, sometimes softer, blending expression and purpose. A masterpiece of modern design and engineering from the Prancing Horse, it's the perfect evolution of the Ferrari Portofino. It boasts a sportier personality and even better handling than its predecessor, while enhancing rather than sacrificing on-board comfort. This is made possible by new options, such as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and ventilated and heated seats. The Ferrari Portofino M thus shares the twin soul of its predecessor, becoming the only car on the market that can legitimately be described as a true coupe with the roof closed and a pure spider with the roof up. This, of course, is due in part to the Retractable Hard Top (RHT), a feature of all Prancing Horse convertibles. Its compact dimensions also make the Portofino M ideal for all occasions. Its unparalleled versatility and on-board comfort make every ride a journey of (re)discovery.
