Ryota Tanabe's private collection on display at Shinjuku Isetan, including rare Madonna photographs

Jun 2, 2014

In the art gallery space on the second floor of the main building of the Isetan Shinjuku store, art director Ryota Tanabe is holding an exhibition titled "My Art Collection," showcasing artworks from his personal collection and showcasing content from his website, "ART RANDAM." The exhibition runs until June 10th. The exhibition features approximately 20 pieces from his private collection, including portraits, abstract paintings, and photographs by contemporary artists (such as Kengo Nakamura, Shuhei Yagi, Ruben Toledo, and Susan Cianciolo) that he has collected from the 1980s to the present. The exhibition also includes a rare photograph of Madonna, taken before her debut, detailing how he acquired it. Additionally, Tanabe's website, "ART RANDAM," features a panel display of art-related conversations between Tanabe and his acquaintances. Each session features a guest, who shares their favorite artworks and discusses their passions for art. The guests featured at the store this time include Maki Taguchi, Hiro Sugiyama, Fumiya Fujii, Masahiro Motoki, and Yasumichi Morita. Tanabe says, "Even those who don't usually have the opportunity to visit galleries or art museums can enjoy art on this floor as casually as they would fashion. We can live without art, but having it can be a joy in life. I want people to enrich their lives by increasing their opportunities to experience art, even if only a little." When finding a piece of art that they like, they often fall in love with it on first impression. Tanabe spent the 1980s and 1990s in New York as a magazine correspondent, disseminating information to Japan. He particularly excelled in art information. He currently plans exhibitions and directs art, and works in a wide range of fields, including web-related work and consulting. During the 2013 renovation of the Isetan Shinjuku store, he was in charge of directing art exhibits in the newly created "Park" sales area.
