The Kyotography International Photography Festival will be held from April 13th to May 6th. The aim is to fuse Kyoto with the art of photography, while at the same time deepening its penetration into everyday life through collaboration with Kyoto's traditional crafts.
For 24 days, the entire city will be filled with carefully selected photographs from around the world, set in locations unique to Kyoto, such as temples, shrines, and townhouses.
A diverse range of international photographers will be participating, including Eikoh Hosoe, who was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1998 for his photographs of Yukio Mishima and butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata; Mali-born Malick Sidibe, who garnered attention in an exhibition at the Fondation Cartier; Seiemon Onishi, a kettle maker who continues the traditions of the late Muromachi period; Kate Barry, daughter of Jane Birkin; and Shiro Takatani, founding member of the artist group Dumb Type. Venues include the Museum of Kyoto, Nijo Castle, and Kodaiji Temple.
