On January 16, 2020, at 2:00 PM (Italian time), Silvia Venturini Fendi unveiled her Fall/Winter 2021-22 Men's Collection at the Fendi Milan office (Via A. Solari 35, Milan). The collection unfolds an adventure filled with optimism, weaving together the illusion of a game of light, color, and op art. A cinematic sequence orchestrated by Italian artist Nico Vascellari set the scene to Not Waving's dance track "What is Normal Today ft. Silvia." Models appear in a 360-degree mirrored tunnel, each one multiplying infinitely, while doorways hang from the ceiling, creating a maze of vibrant neon hues as lights pulsate, just like in a music video.
One by one, Fendi's playful twist on classic menswear pieces emerges from the darkness into a full Technicolor space. The result is a celebration of color and light, and a universal message of solidarity and connection in surreal times. Jewel-like hues of emerald, vermilion, saffron, orange, fuchsia, cobalt, and periwinkle are color-blocked against black and camel charcoal, while linings, inlays, and slash seams enhance the contrast with contrasting textures and colors.
Throughout the collection, versatility and form are expertly balanced in reversible workwear and relaxed outerwear. Cashmere flannel, satin, and striped fur, as well as ruched belted overcoats and trench coats, evoke the relaxed feel of peignoir, while piped pyjama hemlines blend indoor and outdoor concepts. From shawl-collar lounge coats to pullovers, shirt jackets, and Bermuda shorts, diagonal quilting inflates the silk jacquard for a luxurious, cocoon-like feel, and the inside-out construction reveals a padded FF logo lining on the outside. A whimsical and charming interpretation of the "new normal," reimagined as traditional ribbed and cabled long johns, cardigan scarves, mitten cuffs, and wrap "sleeve" neck sweaters.
Noel Fielding, the multidisciplinary artist and performer and icon of London's underground scene, contributed a series of psychedelic artworks for the collection, abstracting the FENDI logo and highlighting the season's cosmic spirit through colorful, stream-of-consciousness graffiti. Faces and creatures emerge from dreamlike tales, enhancing the collection's simple silhouettes with moments of Art Brut madness. Fielding's offbeat, pop sensibility is the latest in a playful selection of artists with whom Silvia Fendi has collaborated, including British artists John Booth, HeyReilly, and Sue Tilley. The Fendi Men's Accessories Collection for Fall/Winter 2021-22 revels in the season's vibrant colors. The Baguette and flat shopper bags are crafted from leather, matte satin and other materials, all treated with a dipped effect, while backpacks and crossbody pouches are crafted from striped Monogram leather embossed with the FF logo. In fancy leather, the Baguette appears as a generous satchel and strap card holder, while Noel Fielding's graphic artwork adorns the Peekaboo and FF Buckle Tote. Elegant classic pieces include ruched FF logo slippers and slip-ons, as well as buckled clogs, which complement the collection's indoor-meets-outdoor ethos, along with the zip-up quilted "Spatz" ankle boots and the FENDI Force Light lug-sole combat boots.
Soundtrack Description
For its Fall/Winter 2021-22 Men's Collection, Fendi unveiled "What is Normal Today st. Silvia," an original soundtrack composed by Italian electronic musician Alessio Natalizia, also known as Not Waving. "Emotional yet deeply optimistic, this track is a cathartic dance-pop odyssey where the unexpected becomes calm at the crossroads of elegance, lush beauty, Italo-Detroit chromatics and subversive escapism," says Natalizia. "Fusing sound design and modern dance music, this piece mixes synth pads, rave stab, cosmic intuition, fluctuating basslines and dreamy drum machines." A voiceover by Silvia Fendi opens up a direct connection between space and time, inviting viewers to reflect on the optimism inherent in Fendi's philosophy. Not Waving is Fendi's latest collaboration promoting Italy's electronic music scene, following in the footsteps of Caterina Barbieri, Alessandro Cortini, Donato Dozzi and Lorenzo Senni.
About Not Waving
Not Waving is the solo project of Alessio Natalizia, a London-based Italian musician and regular on NTS radio. Since releasing his 2013 debut album, Umwelt, which was inspired by the somber, remote-viewing atmosphere of his work, Natalizia has released the awe-inspiring Redacted, the dreamy experimental Human Capabilities (2014), and the album Voices (2015), which draws inspiration from neuroscientist Oliver Sacks, social philosopher B.F. Skinner, and Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov. His critically acclaimed albums, "Animals" (2016) and "Good Luck" (2017), were released on Diagonal Records. He runs the London-based label Ecstatic Recordings, which released "Futuro" (2019), the synth and ambient soundtrack for "The Waldorf Project," one of the world's most intense arthouse theatre experiences, which ran in London, Stockholm and Bangkok. He is also the curator of "Mutazione – Italian Electronic & New Wave Underground 1980-1988" (2013).
