The opening date for Oak Omotesando, a facility to open on the former site of the Hanae Mori Building, has been set for April 4th.
The building's exterior was jointly designed by Obayashi Corporation and Tange Associates. The aim was to create a new landscape that harmonizes with Omotesando's zelkova-lined streets and neighboring buildings. Oak trees, the building's namesake, have been planted in the green space south of the passageway that runs through the center. The space leading from the entrance hall to the second-floor cafe was designed by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, and a mathematical model called "Kukkyocho" (Cave Crest) hangs from the ceiling at the very back, representing the role of a living being in a temple-like space. Lighting designer Shozo Toyohisa was responsible for the lighting of the facade. He used LEDs to create a gradation of light that reflects traditional Japanese colors. The first and second floors will be filled with shops, including flagship stores for EMPORIO ARMANI and COACH, cut and sew brand three dots, Tokyo's first street-level temporary store, NESPRESSO Boutique, and the cafe Chasha Kanedanaka, produced by the Japanese restaurant Kanedanaka.
