Overcoats from Daimaru Seisakusho 2, a New York pattern maker that has been the talk of the town after being worn by Vice President Harris and Mrs. Obama, are being held at a pop-up store in Roppongi

A pop-up store for OVERCOAT, a brand designed by Ryuhei Daimaru, president of New York-based pattern maker Daimaru Seisakusho 2, is being held at Gallery ANB Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo, from December 2nd to 13th.

Following former First Lady Michelle Obama's inauguration dress and the suit worn by Senator Kamala Harris, the likely first Black woman to be appointed Vice President, at the Democratic National Convention in August, Daimaru Seisakusho 2 has been attracting attention across the nation. The pop-up store will sell the capsule collection, which was previously only available on the official online store, which launched in November. Semi-custom orders are also being accepted for the brand's iconic awning (store tent) coat.

This coat, which became famous after being worn by actress Rinko Kikuchi and former Supreme director Angelo Pak, has been attracting attention since the preview, as customers can select the model and fabric design and customize it to their liking. Staff who have come to Japan from New York take measurements on the spot, in an unplugged, old-fashioned tailoring style. Daimaru himself served customers at the venue.

"When we held an exhibition and order session in Nishi-Azabu in August this year, we received five times as many orders as last time, and we really felt the demand. Customers told us they didn't know where they could get the products, so we decided to hold our biggest pop-up yet in Tokyo, where things have remained relatively normal compared to New York and Paris due to the effects of COVID-19," said Daimaru.

The product is truly an "overcoat" created from awnings, a store material that is unfamiliar in Japan and symbolizes the city of New York, and is "developed" from the unique perspective of a pattern maker. "Unlike haute couture, in our line of work, ready-to-wear, it is important that we can make thousands of identical items as long as we have a pattern. Ever since I started this job at the age of 16, I have gotten into the habit of thinking about three-dimensional objects in terms of unfolded diagrams in my head," says Omaru, and the venue also features exhibits that present the background of the brand's craftsmanship, such as an art piece of a goddess statue made from a pattern.

Regarding the work of First Lady Michelle Obama and Senator Kamala Harris, Daimaru says, "Until now, high-end clothing patterns have been made to fit the body shapes of white women, so we are living in an age where designs and patterns that fit the body need to evolve in response to social changes. As a Japanese person whose work has always focused on the technology to create patterns that fit a variety of body shapes, regardless of race or gender, this job is an extension of that."
