Artist George Segal was born on November 26, 1924, in New Jersey, USA. He passed away on June 9, 2000.
Born into a family that ran a poultry business, he majored in art at New York University. After graduating, he took over the family business, but soon resumed his artistic career, and in 1958 he exhibited works on linen that combined painting and sculpture. In 1963, he was selected as one of the "10 American Sculptors" in the US section of the Sao Paulo Biennale, an international contemporary art exhibition.
Meanwhile, in 1961 he invented a technique in which he soaked bandages in plaster and wrapped them around the body to create a mold of the person. In 1971, he further developed this technique, introducing "inside casting," and produced a series of works that realistically reproduced even facial expressions and wrinkles in clothing. In the actual exhibition, these works are combined with props such as old furniture and walls, and the silent statues standing there powerfully convey the emptiness that lurks in everyday life. This technique of making casts directly from the human body overturned conventional concepts of sculpture, and it made Segal known as one of America's leading sculptors.

Segal has since held solo exhibitions around the world, including a major exhibition in Japan at the National Museum of Art, Osaka in 1982. He has received numerous art awards, including the Praemium Imperiale.
