Tachibana Gallery will be holding the "Kenji Shibata Exhibition: Locked in the ether" from December 5th until the 20th.
Kenji Shibata is a photographer who uses the metaphor of objects to express situations such as being trapped or the passage of time. In this solo exhibition, he will be presenting over a dozen new works on the theme of time, using flowers such as ranunculus and the ice that traps them.
The situation of the flowers trapped in ice is said to be a metaphor for the eternal present. The rich colors of purple, pink, and red are vibrant and fantastical. The sharp contours evoke a sense of vitality. Meanwhile, the melting ice is a metaphor for the passage of time. As the ice melts, the flowers are freed from their restraints, but they gradually decay. Both metaphors coexist in the photographs, prompting viewers to question the relationship between time and people.
