A pop-up shop showcasing Latvian lifestyles, both past and present, called "LATVIAN LIFE STYLE 'OLD & NEW'," has opened on the fourth floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku. It will run until November 18th. On the 15th, a concert of Latvian Christmas songs featuring the country's traditional instruments, the kakle and the violin, will be held, providing an opportunity to experience the country's culture.
Latvia has been gaining attention since its capital, Riga, was selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2014. The buyer in charge of the project commented, "Latvia is a country rich in handcrafts made from natural materials. Young creators are also being nurtured, and many items combine traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities."
The shop offers Christmas ornaments, gloves, scarves, accessories, books, and other items from Latvia, said to be the birthplace of the Christmas tree. In addition, the shop offers modern-style T-shirts featuring the "RIGA" logo and women's clothing from Latvia. From 2pm and 5pm on the 15th, there will be an event where Kirkle will play Latvian Christmas songs on violin, and from 3pm on the 16th there will be a talk show by "meme," an art collective of three women who traveled to Riga.
The buyer, who visited Latvia in October this year, said, "The best thing about Latvia is that when you pick up a product, you can tell it's story, about where and who made it. Items that we have requested and had made by local makers are also on display in the store. I feel that Latvia is a country that will be exciting to watch in 10 to 20 years, and I wonder how the sensibilities and craftsmanship of young people will develop in the future."
