[Editor's Blog] What I bought this week - the down jacket I hate

Nov 16, 2014

I hate down jackets. The baggy silhouette, the striped stitching, the obvious synthetic outer texture. I find myself asking every brand, "Can't they put a little more effort into it?" It's a real shame. Until now, the only down jackets I've seen that I thought were cool were JUNYA WATANABE COMME des GARÇONS, which uses volume to create stunning sculptures; Rick Owens, which similarly transforms volume into robotic forms; and Jean Paul GAULTIER, which transforms monotonous stitching into something fetishistic. However, they were all women's. I've always wondered if there were any brands that make cool men's down jackets. As a lazy person who likes to dress lightly, a T-shirt underneath would be just fine! That's how I want to spend the middle of winter. It was then that I came across a down jacket from The Viridi-anne. I've loved Viridi-anne since they had a street-level store in Harajuku, and I love their interesting materials and details. They've been releasing down jackets for a while, but this season's collection was a hit with me because of the material, fit, and minimalist, stitch-free design. It was 78,000 yen. The material is a lustrous, slightly firm cotton-nylon blend. I love the crisp feel. The zipper is waterproof, with all the zipper teeth covered in vinyl for a matte finish. The pockets are perforated in the seams and closed with concealed zippers. The sleeves are long and have thumbholes. The high stand collar is warm, and the zipper positioning creates a variety of looks. And above all, the silhouette is beautiful. It has a slim fit, creating a voluminous yet smart silhouette. Incidentally, the one I bought was a reproduction. The first production run was released in August, but it sold out immediately, so I missed out. The August run had a gray lining, but the re-release has a black lining, which was actually lucky for me, as I love black. I'm looking forward to the new year, when it will be mid-winter.
