Sneaking into the "Attack on Titan" exhibition at the Ueno Royal Museum. Buying a ton of ANREALAGE T-shirts!

Nov 27, 2014

The "Attack on Titan" exhibition opens at the Ueno Royal Museum on November 28th. Following the anime adaptation, a live-action film starring Haruma Miura, Kiko Mizuhara, and Satomi Ishihara has just been announced, and this highly anticipated exhibition is expected to be packed from day one.

The entrance to the "Titan-infested world," where visitors can experience the world of the work, is a sturdy door awaits at the top of a flight of stairs from the museum entrance. Follow the guide's instructions, and your heart will already be pounding as you wait for the door to open.

Once inside, a terrifying experience awaits. A "Horror Experience Theater" featuring gimmicks such as sound, light, wind, and vibration allows visitors to sense the presence of the Titan gradually approaching. The experience lasts approximately five minutes. Experience the thrill of being discovered and attacked by a Titan, just like the characters in the story.

Walking further into the museum, you'll find the "World of Original Artwork." Character voices appear as graphical text on the walls, and commentary from the original author, Hajime Isayama, dances in speech bubbles alongside the original artwork. An early drawing features a speech bubble with a line, "After drawing this, I realized, 'I have to draw from photographs properly from now on.' You can't just draw from your head." Even non-fans of the original work are sure to enjoy this exhibit.

The next section, "The World of Hajime Isayama," introduces the author's upbringing and the works that influenced him as a child. It traces his journey from a boy immersed in manga and games in his detached room in the mountainous region of Hita City, Oita Prefecture, to a "creator" inspired by the images he saw on TV, the words of his teachers, and the masterpieces of his predecessors.

The first thing mentioned as something that "inspired him" is the American-based mixed martial arts event, UFC. Knowing Isayama's philosophy that "one of my goals in creating this manga was to depict the mixed martial arts of giants" will naturally change the way you approach his work.

He also reveals a surprising side of him: despite his strong determination to become a manga artist, he was unable to publicly declare his ambition. He deliberately enrolled in a department other than his first choice, manga, when he entered vocational school, and then secretly changed departments. This exhibition is sure to be a great inspiration for anyone with a secret dream.

Needless to say, the voices and expressions of the characters who fill the venue, wishing to "live and protect those they care about" as they continue to fight ferocious giants, will be a great inspiration for anyone searching for the meaning of life.

At the final stage near the exit, a super-realistic model of a giant Titan awaits, but on the way there, each visitor will find the courage to fight in their heart, allowing them to face the Titans with a slightly stronger heart than when they entered the museum.

Also on display are T-shirts created in collaboration with "ANREALAGE" for the exhibition. In reference to the film, which features Titans who become more active during the day, the T-shirts (9,000 yen) feature a "photochromic print" that reveals the pattern when exposed to sunlight. They come in four designs: EREN YEAGER, COLDSSUS TITAN, FEMALE TITAN, and ARMORED TITAN. Sales will begin on December 9th at ANREALAGE TOKYO, ZOZOTOWN, and other locations. Of course, fans of the original work will buy in bulk!
