The Shiseido Gallery is hosting "Makoto Nakamura's Shiseido: Creating Beauty," the first retrospective of graphic designer and art director Makoto Nakamura, who passed away last year. The exhibition runs through June 29th. This exhibition explores Nakamura's creative process, which saw him transform Shiseido's illustrated advertisements into photographic ones, through unpublished materials such as archival photographs and proof copies left at his home. It also showcases numerous posters, including a perfume advertisement featuring Sayoko Yamaguchi. A talk show featuring design critic Hiroshi Kashiwagi and graphic designers Taku Sato and Makoto Matsunaga will be held at 2:00 PM on June 22nd in the Hanatsubaki Hall on the third floor of the Shiseido Ginza Building (registration required). Nakamura was born in Iwate in 1926. After graduating from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), he joined Shiseido in 1949. He distinguished himself through his photographic expression, producing numerous advertisements from the mid-1950s through the 1980s. He served at Shiseido from head of the policy office in the advertising department to advisor, and was active in a wide range of fields including the Alliance Graphique Internationale. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1993. He passed away in June 2013.
