On March 5th, Pierpaolo Piccioli's Valentino held its Fall/Winter 2017-18 women's collection show at the former Rothschild Mansion. Drawing on 19th-century Victorian and 1980s Memphis styles, the collection featured pop motifs reminiscent of the work of painter and designer Nathalie Du Pasquier, boldly combining polar opposites and unusual elements to create a modern collection. This concept was also reflected in the use of materials, with many dresses featuring the sophisticated technique of joining different materials, such as goat fur and crepe. A set featuring a coat featuring a patchwork of colored mink with a pop motif and a knit dress printed with the same motif, created a modern impression, but there were also looks that adhered to traditional couture styles, such as a lace and tulle dress embroidered with jet black beads.
Other pieces included a coat, top and pants set made almost entirely from hand-sewn double-face material, and a felt panel dress with dots embroidered with micro seed beads, all of which are intricate pieces that are unique to a couture house. Each look was transformed into an ultra-contemporary look by pairing it with shoes that are the polar opposite of couture, such as gladiator-style lace-up boots, boots with studded soles and sandals decorated with fur. Even in these moments, Piccioli's skillful sense was clearly evident.
