Fred Perry and British brand Nigel Cabourn unveiled a collaboration in London on June 16th, inspired by their shared love of table tennis. Fred Perry's founder, Frederick John Perry, was born in the UK and is known as a tennis player who won numerous world championships, including Wimbledon, in the 1930s. He was also a world table tennis champion. Designer Nigel Cabourn, meanwhile, is such a big fan of table tennis that he still practices five days a week with a former British national team coach. As a fan of Fred Perry himself, he has previously presented a collection themed around "table tennis," inspired by the clothes Fred wore during his playing days. The first collection was exclusively men's wear. The exhibition featured casual looks, such as polo shirts and blousons reminiscent of classic uniforms, as well as tote bags and canvas shoes. Nigel himself explained the collection and shared stories that led to the collaboration, and even styled guests, creating a relaxed and intimate event where the designer's personality was clearly conveyed. A Nigel Cabourn-only shop is scheduled to open this autumn in the space where the event was held in London's Covent Garden.
Regarding the collaboration, Nigel said, "Fred Perry is committed to British history, tradition and British manufacturing, and like me, they share a high level of awareness as a truly British brand. What's more, I'm a big fan of Fred, so it's an honour to be able to collaborate with them."
