CHANEL presented its Fall/Winter 2017-18 ready-to-wear collection at the Grand Palais in Paris. A 37-meter-tall giant rocket towered the venue, with 90 models walking down a galaxy-like runway surrounding it. Chanel has always amazed audiences with its elaborate productions. This collection, as Karl Lagerfeld described it, "follows astronaut Thomas Pesquet on a journey beyond the sky, reaching for the stars." Its iconic tweed suit featured a unique design, with square shoulders peeking out from under a gilet. The collar was transformed into a large, stand-up collar reminiscent of a spacesuit, and the sleeves were adorned with long, jeweled gloves. Bermuda shorts were paired with skirts and dresses to accentuate the slender silhouette. Pastel tweed jackets were coordinated with holographic metallic capes that covered the ears. Comical astronaut and planet graphics printed on matching sets and sheer dresses added a pop vibe. Two-tone metallic boots completed the luxurious Chanel "space suit." Sparkling headbands complemented slicked-back hairstyles. Other accessories included an iridescent XXL clutch bag, a rocket-shaped mini bag, and metallic versions of the Gabrielle de Chanel handbag, released in Spring/Summer 2017. For the finale, Karl Lagerfeld appeared with child model Hudson Kroenig, who also appeared on the runway, and flipped the launch switch on the rocket. As the countdown began, the giant rocket erupted in a flash of light and rose to Earth. The spectacular show once again stunned the audience, and concluded with the performance of Elton John's classic "Rocket Man."
CHANEL ambassadors Pharrell Williams, Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp, Cara Delevingne, and Caroline de Maigret were in attendance, as well as film director Sofia Coppola and musicians Lily Allen and Rita Ora. Actresses Nana Komatsu and Ayami Nakajo also made an appearance from Japan, adding a touch of glamour to the collection.
