Former tennis player Shuzo Matsuoka was born on November 6, 1967, in Tokyo. Since retiring from active competition, he has worked as a coach for junior players, a sportscaster, and a TV personality.
He is the son of businessman Isao Matsuoka and former Takarazuka Revue Star Troupe male star Shizu Chinami. His great-grandfather was Ichizo Kobayashi, founder of the Hankyu Toho Group (now the Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group), which includes Hankyu Railway and the Takarazuka Revue. He attended Keio University kindergarten, junior high school, and high school, but transferred to Yanagawa High School in Fukuoka Prefecture to pursue tennis, which he had begun at the age of 10. While there, he met world-renowned coach Bob Brett, dropped out of high school, and traveled alone to the United States. He attended high school in Tampa, Florida, while pursuing a professional career.
He turned professional in 1986 and was selected to represent Japan in the Davis Cup, a men's international team competition. Armed with his powerful serve, he became the first Japanese man to win a tour title at the 1992 Korea Open. He also competed in the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics. In 1995, he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and achieved a world ranking of 46th.

He retired from active competition at the young age of 30 in 1998. Since then, he has served as a tournament advisor for the Japan Open, helping to organize the tournament and providing training to foster successors. He also participates as a sports commentator, providing commentary for sports other than tennis.

He is known for being one of the most passionate people in the world, and his messages of encouragement, which are in line with his outlook on life and beliefs, as well as his unique performances, have garnered popularity. His MAD videos are particularly popular on the video sharing service Nico Nico Douga, where his birthday is celebrated every year.
