Ballet queen Guillem and Akram Khan, who performed at the London Olympics opening ceremony, will perform together in Japan

Nov 11, 2013

"Sacred Monsters," a stage production that has been performed worldwide since 2006 and received rave reviews in Japan in 2009, will be performed again at the Shinagawa U-Port Hall from November 28th to December 1st. This production is a collaboration between Sylvie Guillem, the "Queen of Ballet" who previously performed with the Paris Opera and the Royal Ballet, and Akram Khan, known for his fusion of dance with the Indian dance form "Kathak" and choreographing the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. "Sacred Monsters" is a nickname first used in 19th-century France for theater stars. This production explores the "past and present" journeys of Guillem and Akram, two dancers who continue to explore new horizons while mastering the classical canons of the East and the West. The two dance together, expressing and fusing their creative worlds through the common language of dance.

This work also features internationally acclaimed artists from various fields. Gauri Sharma Tripathi from India choreographed Akram's Kathak solo, while Taiwanese choreographer and Cloud Gate Dance Company artistic director Lin Huaimin choreographed Guillem's solo, "Sally." The music is by British composer Philip Sheppard. The stage space was created in collaboration with Japanese set designer Yasushi Hariu, costume designer Kei Ito, and Finnish lighting designer Mikki Kuntu.
