The Kyoto Confectionery Exhibition "Nature in the Palm of Your Hand" is a public competition to solicit new Kyoto confectionery ideas, and the winning works will be on display and for sale exclusively

Event Date:2020.11.04-11.10
Oct 29, 2020
"Nature in the Palm of Your Hand" is a Kyoto confectionery design competition that selects new Kyoto confectionery designs from a public competition and exhibits the winning works. Now in its sixth year, this year's theme is "Zen," and the winning works will be exhibited at the Yuhisai Kodokan and four other venues. At the satellite venue, JR Kyoto Isetan, we will exhibit and sell the winning works, as well as limited-edition products created specifically for this Kyoto confectionery exhibition. Additionally, some products will be available for a limited time on our online store.

Award-Winning Works

The theme for this year's exhibition is "Small Art Expressed Through Zen."
These confectionery works are inspired by the world of Zen, the spirit of which is passed down through the tea ceremony, and are expressed with a new sensibility. [All items are sold exclusively at JR Kyoto Isetan]

Shape
"Shape" (Artist: Uesaka Yuutaro) 486 yen
Made from konashi rice cake and filled with red and white bean paste. This confection was inspired by Sengai Gibon's "○△□."
The circle (circle) is represented by red and white bean paste, while the △ (Zen sitting posture) and □ (a trapped mind) are represented in black and white, and the konashi rice cake is finished to resemble the flow of water and water ripples (sand patterns) of a rock garden.

Kabekan
"Kabekan" (Artist: Terada Shogo) 486 yen
Made from yokan containing soybean flour and brown sugar. This confection was inspired by Bodhidharma's "Nine Years Facing a Wall."
The wall is made from heavy yokan. It's not quite nine years facing a wall, but we painstakingly searched for the right combination of brown sugar and soybean flour so that you will find it delicious.

Where is the moon?
"Where is the moon?" (Artist: Uemura Takeshi) 486 yen
Made from sweet potato, filled with smooth bean paste. This confection was inspired by Sengai Gibon's "Painting of Hotei Pointing at the Moon." We have tried to express a Zen painting using "surikomi," a technique that is also a task in the Level 1 national confectionery manufacturing skills examination.

Summer Afternoon
"Summer Afternoon" (by Chiemi Kishimoto) 486 yen
Made with Kingyokukan. Inspired by the rock gardens of Ryoanji and Tofukuji temples.
The blue of the maple leaves and the white of the sand ripples are dazzling, and I close my eyes on a summer afternoon. The gentle breeze makes me lose track of time, and I feel like I'm part of the scenery. I cropped the image of that moment.

"Nature in the Palm of Your Hand - Zen" Limited Edition Sweets

This product was created specially for this Kyoto Confectionery Exhibition. [All items sold exclusively at JR Kyoto Isetan]

MU/YU
MU/YU 756 yen (5 pieces), 2,646 yen (20 pieces)
A rakugan assortment featuring five flavors expressed in grayscale: black pepper, cacao nib, walnut, cardamom, and normal. Returning to the original philosophy of rakugan, we have combined a variety of Zen-like ingredients. Enjoy the changes in color and flavor, and the changes in mind and body.

Stone Garden
"Stone Garden" 810 yen (6pieces)
Soft rakugan sweets made with wasanbon sugar, modeled after the rock garden of Ryoanji Temple and the spirit of contentment. Contentment represents the ultimate Zen principle of "knowing that I have enough." "Contentment" combines Daitokuji natto, a representative fermented food found in Zen temples, and "Stone Garden" combines rum raisins, creating a taste of old and new Zen.

Matsukaze
"Matsukaze" 1,998 yen
This traditional Matsukaze is baked in a soft, castella-like dough made with white miso and ginger. Chestnuts and walnuts are baked in this baked confectionery, harking back to the origins of confectionery, the "kigashi" (wooden confectionery).
