Pastry chef Pierre Hermé was born on November 20, 1961, in Alsace, France. His wife is bag designer Barbara Rihl.
Born into a family of bakers in Alsace for four generations, he apprenticed under pastry chef Gaston Lenotre. At the age of 20, he became chef de pastry at FAUCHON, where he continued to create works for 11 years, earning worldwide acclaim. In 1997, he served as vice president of Ladurée, where he focused on the opening of its Champs-Élysées and Printemps stores.
In 1998, he launched his own brand, Pierre Hermé Paris, and opened its first store at the Hotel New Otani in Tokyo. His creative techniques have earned him the nickname "Picasso of the sweets world" by Vogue magazine. Their signature patisserie, Ispahan, a combination of rose, lychee, and raspberry, has been described by manga artist Nagano Mamoru as the best cake in Japan. It appears in Nagano's Five Star Stories. In October, they launched Ispahan yogurt in collaboration with Ohayo.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of Pierre Hermé Paris opening its first store in Tokyo. Starting next February, Pierre Hermé Paris will provide all of the sweets for the restaurants, meeting spaces, weddings, and banquets at the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto.
