This automatic model is derived from the Timex Q, a faithful reproduction of the 1979 model. Released during the full-scale transition from mechanical to battery-powered (quartz) movements, the Timex Q faithfully reproduces the classic design of the past, featuring a red and blue anodized rotating bezel, a hatch caseback that allows the user to replace the battery with a coin, a woven stainless steel bracelet, and a dial that features the Q symbol for quartz movements, which was cutting-edge technology at the time, above the brand logo.

The M79 is a spinoff of the Timex Q, and is the first automatic model to be released in Japan, featuring a skeletonized caseback and the word AUTOMATIC instead of the Q on the dial.
