Printemps Ginza announced the results of an online survey of its email newsletter subscribers titled "Survey on Women's Attitudes Regarding Christmas" (conducted in October 2013 with 443 valid responses).
First, when asked about the price of gifts, the average amount expected from a boyfriend or partner was 36,401 yen, in the high 30,000 yen range. The average budget for gifts planned for boyfriends or partners was 22,902 yen, recovering to the 20,000 yen range for the first time since 2010. Both giving and receiving gifts are up by more than 3,000 yen compared to 2012. The budget for rewarding oneself also increased by about 2,000 yen compared to the previous year, to 44,292 yen. It appears that the improving economic climate is also affecting the Christmas budgets of women in their 20s and 30s. As for presents, the top three gifts people want from their boyfriend or partner are "dining at a restaurant," "necklaces," and "rings and other accessories." It seems that the number of women hoping to receive jewelry after Christmas dinner has suddenly increased. As for gifts they plan to give themselves, "clothes" came in first, "home-cooked meals" in second place, and "scarves," which were not even in the top three last year, ranked third. With an increasing number of businessmen no longer needing ties, perhaps people are choosing affordable seasonal items that can be worn every day, both on and off the job. Regarding how to reward themselves for their hard work this year, "clothes" came in first, "cosmetics," and "bags" in third place. One in three people also said they plan to "increase their budget for rewarding themselves" this year. With the expected bonus increase and the event immediately following Christmas, many people seem to be looking to acquire the fashion items they've always wanted. As for where they plan to spend Christmas, over 60% of people plan to spend it at home. When asked who they spend the most important time with, "family" came in first place, beating out boyfriend or partner. The average budget for Christmas cake, a Christmas treat, was 4,524 yen, surpassing the previous year's record high, the highest since 2008. Some respondents said they would be happy to spend up to 50,000 yen!
