Born March 30th, 1927. His father was Kojiro Tsutsumi, founder of the Seibu Group. After graduating from the University of Tokyo in 1951, he served as Kojiro's secretary and joined Seibu Department Stores in 1954. Upon Kojiro's death in 1964, he inherited the Seibu Group's distribution division. His half-brother, Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, became the group's head. In 1970, the group became independent from the main group and formed the Seibu Distribution Group (later the Saison Group).
In addition to hotel management and resort development, the company also expanded its business, including the development of Parco, the launch of MUJI, the legendary Roppongi record shop "WAVE," and the opening of the Sezon Museum of Art, furthering its cultural endeavors. However, with the collapse of the bubble economy, he resigned as president of the Saison Group in 1991. He then devoted himself to his writing career.
