Event Date:2020.10.31-11.15
Oct 20, 2020
Matsuzakaya Nagoya will be holding a photo exhibition to commemorate the release (May 2020) of photographer Nagi Yoshida's new collection, "DRAG QUEEN -No Light, No Queen-."

Dates: Saturday, October 31, 2020 - Sunday, November 15, 2020 Venue: Matsuzakaya Hall, South Building 8F, Matsuzakaya Nagoya Store

Nagi Yoshida has photographed ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples around the world, capturing their unique sensibilities, colors, and lifestyles in a way that has resonated with many and been featured in the media. It was "drag queens" that inspired Nagi Yoshida's aesthetic sense. Their existence, which uses female sexuality as a motif and sublimates it into self-expression, transcends the boundaries of culture and is becoming so influential that it shows the world how the next generation should live. This photo exhibition shines a spotlight on these fascinating women, allowing you to see Yoshida Nagi's next celebration of humanity. During the exhibition, a limited-time NAGI Shop will be open to sell original goods, and Yoshida Nagi will also be holding a talk show and autograph session. *There are various theories about the term DRAG QUEEN, including that it is an abbreviation of "drag," which means dragging a costume, or "dress as a girl."

Yoshida Nagi Profile
Born in 1986. Photographer. Self-taught in photography, Yoshida traveled alone to Africa in 2009. Since then, he has photographed and exhibited ethnic minorities around the world, including in Africa. His unique sense of color and intuitive way of life were recognized, and he was selected as one of the "100 People Who Will Shape the Next Generation" by Nikkei Business magazine in 2017. That same year, he also won the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award Photography Prize.

[Comment from Yoshida Nagi]
"The more different people are from me, the more interesting and cool they are." This has been my belief since childhood. It was this feeling that has always lingered in my heart, which is why I have traveled to meet and photograph ethnic groups all over the world. The drag queens I chose as my subjects for this project are also completely different from me, which is what sparked my interest in them. The way these women stood when I actually encountered them in New York and Paris was filled with an overwhelming presence, indescribable beauty, and intense individuality and drama. It was similar in a way to what I felt when I saw indigenous peoples and ethnic minorities; it was a power that can only be possessed by people who have accepted and shouldered their own history and pride. I hope that you will be able to experience this through this exhibition.
